What It Is

A raised tank, usually elevated on a steel or concrete tower, that stores a town's water supply and uses gravity to keep pressure steady in the pipes below.

How Rare Is It on Road Trip Bingo?

Common. Nearly every small town has one, and they're visible from a long way off.

Spotting Tip

Look for them rising above the treeline as you approach a town; many are painted with the town's name, making them easy to spot and read from the highway.

Fun Fact

Some towns turn their water tower into a local landmark by painting it like a giant sports ball, a piece of fruit, or a mascot — there's a famous one shaped like a giant peach in Gaffney, South Carolina.
